turning our hearts toward the hope of eternity

Into the Sunrise

Faith, Poetry

“Into the Sunrise”

You always told me I would fly
You didn’t mention it would be
Over oceans vast and deep
Smallest sheep asleep on my lap
Forbidden fruit at my fingertips
I lay it down

I wanted a window seat so badly
So I could meet You in the clouds
You gave me a window seat to Your majesty
It was darker than I expected

The night sky I didn’t ask for was full of constellations
So expansive it filled up my view
So do You
“I am bigger than all of this,” You remind me.

Slowly, the clouds I longed to see come into view
Faintest wisps of auburn smoke
Barely detectable at first
Then swelling into sea billows rolling across the sky
Soon glowing white with the promise of morning
Even darkness is not dark to You
Immanuel ever present with us in the sorrows of night
But You are the dawning of the light

Sunrise is coming
And we are flying east

That’s the answer to my question
Why I had to ride out the darkness of night
When I thought I’d see Your beauty in the daylight
Because I wanted you to ride into the sunrise, child
There’s no better way to see it than from the darkness
There’s no other way to see it at all

So I lifted you off the ground and carried you there
Gave you a front row seat to My glory
I gave stars to light the way
They lit up the sky like a blazing fire
And they were beautiful
But mortals can’t stop the world from turning
And they fade from view
You won’t need them anymore
When the morning light appears
Everything pales in comparison to the light of My glory

So I strained to see Your sunrise
It’s not the clouds or the stars I long for
It is Your blazing light
I caught a glimpse
And I asked You to bring it into view
So often You do
But not this time
A glimmer is enough to assure me it is coming
Your hope is enough for my certainty
I don’t need my faith to be sight
Not yet
Oh, but I want to see Your glory!

Yet there is a kind of seeing with the eyes of faith that reveals a beauty all its own
You let me have it
You give me eyes to see
You know how to dry them, too

You planned this day since before the foundations of the world
You always knew the way
You chose us in You to be holy in Your sight
But only by Your blood and by Your might
Now give us this day our daily bread
Set us down gently on Your firm foundation
Let us run in Your light

“But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays…”

Malachi 4:2

“Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.”

Hosea 6:3
